Financial Aid Options

Adopted by the Board of Directors Effective 2/12/2004

The Pacific Northwest Budo Association (PNBA) is a non-profit educational organization devoted to fostering understanding and appreciation of Japanese Budo and culture in our community, and the realization of each individual's full potential and its application to daily life for the betterment of society.

The PNBA is committed to providing financial assistance to students in need who wish to participate in PNBA programs, and who have 1.) Demonstrated initiative in helping the dojo and its members to fulfill our mission; 2.) Who have shown sincere interest and commitment to Budo practice through good attendance and sincere effort; and 3.) Who have been enrolled in a PNBA program for a minimum of six months.

The PNBA and its member organizations admit students of any race to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at this school, and the school does not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, or religious affiliation in the administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, or athletic or other school-administered programs.

The PNBA coordinates three financial aid programs for our member organizations. The application for PNBA Financial Aid is printed on the reverse side of this information sheet and should be submitted directly to the student's Chief Instructor. Applications will be reviewed on a case by case basis, and will be evaluated based upon the student's demonstrated sincerity and dedication, degree of financial need, and in the case of reapplications the student's fulfillment of any prior aid conditions such as work contributions.

Student Loans/Tuition Deferment

Reduced tuition (approximately 50%) Two hours of work required each month.

PNBA Chief Instructors may authorize student loans resulting in tuition reductions for up to two consecutive three-month periods. In exchange the student must maintain an excellent attendance record, a sincere and dedicated spirit, and must contribute two hours of work to the dojo each month. PNBA Chief Instructors, after careful review of the student's records after the first three months are concluded, may renew tuition reductions once for a total of six months support. Further requests for financial aid must be directed to the PNBA Board of Directors.

Conference Support

PNBA Chief Instructors may authorize cash grants or waive special event fees in order to support a student's attendance at an important seminar or Camp, or to support promotion grading. Such grants are made directly from individual PNBA program budgets and application approval is based upon demonstrated commitment to the practice and our dojo, level of need, and funds availability.

Scholarships/Work-Study

Apply to your Chief Instructor. Decisions will be made by the PNBA Board of Directors based upon need, the student's commitment as demonstrated by attendance, attitude, fulfillment of eligibility requirements, and sincerity. Also reviewed is the potential of the candidate, progress in their art, and funds availability. Aid of this kind always involves work commitments and three-month reviews/renewals.
